MORE from Michael Experiment with the camera settings. Dont be limited to what other people tell you. When I started landscape astrophotography - I adhered strictly to 2 things - settings F2.8 ISO 1600 and the rule of 500 usually being 30s shutter. Despite experimenting a lot with photography I think it still took me around 1 1/2 years before I broke out of that mould of formulas.

Now when Im out shooting Ill start with some "safe" proven shots but Ill have a list of different things to try out. Try a wide variety of shutters ISO aperture focal lengths focus and more - and see what happens. If you like the look of 60s exposure? Great! There are so many things that can be done differently. Then from experimenting you can see what you liked or didnt and then work out ways to improve it.

On this particular trip - I had several tests planned and took a range of panoramas and images. For this image I used a fog filter and held it in front of the lens for part of the exposure akira fujii technique I originally had a different sort of light painting self-portrait visualized but it didnt work the way I wanted for a panorama so I improvised with speedlites and Gary Fong .

Hoodoos in Southern Utah. We will visit this spot during our June Workshop. Single exposure with Low Level Lighting. _____________ ________________________________________________ The June workshop is full but if you want to visit and photograph hoodoos under the Milky Way join us in July in “Hoodoo Heaven“ in the New Mexico Badlands. There are 2 three day workshops July 8-10 and July 11-13 with an optional extra day on July 14. In addition to classic Landscape Astrophotography we will do something extra for fun. After capturing the landscape and Milky Way we will add some fictional figures like an astronaut alien or characters from Star Wars or Lord of the Rings etc. Lectures will be in the afternoon.
